BY TRAIN

Travelling to the Motegi circuit by train is a popular and convenient option, especially if you're coming from major cities like Tokyo. Here’s a detailed guide on how to reach Motegi using Japan’s efficient rail system:

From Tokyo to Utsunomiya

Option 1: Shinkansen (Bullet Train)
Train: Tohoku Shinkansen

  • Stations: Depart from Tokyo Station and arrive at Utsunomiya Station.
  • Travel Time: Approximately 50 to 55 minutes.
  • Cost: Around ¥4,500 to ¥5,500 one-way for a reserved seat, depending on the train.
  • Note: The Tohoku Shinkansen is the fastest option and provides a comfortable journey.

Option 2: Regular Train
Train: Ueno-Tokyo Line or Shonan-Shinjuku Line (limited express or rapid service)

  • Stations: Depart from Tokyo Station or Ueno Station to Utsunomiya Station.
  • Travel Time: Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours.
  • Cost: Around ¥1,980 one-way.
  • Note: This is a cheaper alternative, though the journey takes longer than the Shinkansen.

From Utsunomiya to Motegi

Option 1: Bus
You can book a seat for travelling from the main cities around the venue (Utsunomiya, Tokyo, Shinjuku, Tsukuba, Motegi) here.

  • By bus from/to Utsunomiya: ticket costs 2,500 yen (17 UDS) / one-way

Option 2: Train
Train: JR Utsunomiya Line to Mooka Line

  • Stations: From Utsunomiya Station, take the JR Utsunomiya Line to Shimodate Station, then transfer to the Mooka Line to Motegi Station.
  • Travel Time: Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.
  • Cost: Around ¥1,650 one-way.
  • Note: The Mooka Line is a scenic but slow local line. From Motegi Station, you will need to take a taxi or a shuttle bus to the circuit, as it’s about a 15-minute drive.

Additional Tips

IC Cards: Use an IC card like Suica or Pasmo for convenience (for more information click here), as these can be used on most trains and buses.
Reservations: If travelling during peak times (weekends, holidays, race events), it’s advisable to reserve seats on the Shinkansen or express trains.
Train Schedules: Check the train schedules in advance, especially for the local lines and buses, as they may have limited services on certain days.
