TRAFFIC RULES IN JAPAN

It would be unfortunate to get fined while visiting Japan. Follow our advice to enjoy the MotoGP race in Motegi without incurring extra costs.

DRIVING ON THE LEFT

In Japan, vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road.

SPEED LIMITS

Follow these speed limits while driving in Japan:

  • Urban Areas: Generally 40 km/h (25 mph).
  • Rural Roads: Typically 50-60 km/h (31-37 mph).
  • Expressways: Commonly 80-100 km/h (50-62 mph).

TRAFFIC SIGNALS

  • Traffic Lights: Red means stop, yellow means prepare to stop, and green means go.
  • Turn Arrows: Arrows on traffic lights indicate permissible turns.
  • Stop Signs: Japan's stop signs are triangular, displaying "止まれ" (tomare), which means "stop."
  • Priority Signs: Pay close attention to "yield" and "no entry" signs to navigate intersections and restricted areas safely.

ALCOHOL AND DRIVING

If you're stopped by the police in Japan with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.03% or higher, you're legally intoxicated and guilty of drunk driving. The legal thresholds are 0.3 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood or 0.15 millilitres of alcohol per litre of breath.

SEAT BELTS

Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, and children under six must be secured in a child safety seat.
