HISTORY OF THE MOTEGI CIRCUIT

The Mobility Resort Motegi, formerly known as Mobility Resort Motegi, is a motor racing track located in Motegi, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It is a unique venue with a rich history, known for its dual configuration that includes both an oval and a road course. Here is a brief history of the Motegi Circuit:

Origins and construction (1990s)
Mobility Resort Motegi was conceived by Honda as a facility to promote motorsports in Japan and to serve as a testing ground for their vehicles. Construction began in 1995, and the circuit was officially opened in 1997. Its original name "Twin Ring" comes from its unique design, featuring two separate tracks: a 2.493 km (1.549-mile) oval track and a 4.801 km (2.983-mile) road course. This dual configuration makes it one of the few circuits in the world to have both an oval and a road course.

Early years
Upon opening, Mobility Resort Motegi quickly gained international recognition. It became the home of the Indy Japan 300, an event in the IndyCar Series that brought American-style open-wheel racing to Japan. The first IndyCar race at Motegi was held in 1998, and the event became a regular fixture until 2011, attracting top drivers from around the world.

The road course also hosted a variety of international and domestic events, including MotoGP, the premier class of motorcycle racing. The circuit hosted its first MotoGP race in 1999, and it has been a staple on the calendar since then, known for its technical layout and challenging conditions.

MotoGP at Motegi
The Motegi circuit, located in Tochigi, Japan, has been a significant venue in MotoGP since its debut on the calendar in 1999. Originally built by Honda, the circuit features a technical layout with tight corners and heavy braking zones, making it a unique challenge for riders.

Historical Moments:

  • 1999: The inaugural MotoGP race at Motegi was part of the 500cc World Championship (now MotoGP).
  • 2004: MotoGP Japanese Grand Prix returned to Motegi after the race was held in Suzuka. Japanese rider Makoto Tamada secured a memorable victory, becoming a local hero.

Honda's Home Track
For Honda, the Motegi circuit holds special significance as it is owned by the company. Honda has often used the circuit to unveil new technologies and motorcycles. The track is a crucial part of Honda's racing program, and the success of Honda riders at Motegi has been a point of pride for the company. Honda's commitment to MotoGP and its investment in Motegi has helped shape the circuit into one of the premier venues on the calendar.
